Mayor's Levee Speech - January 9, 2011
COLLINGWOOD, ON
Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen. Welcome to the Mayor’s New Year’s Levee for 2011.
Let me begin by offering my very best wishes to you and your families for a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.
This is an especially exciting day for our Council and I hope each of you. A New Year Levee provides each of us the opportunity to remember all the wonderful times we experienced from the past year, as well as, looking forward to the exciting times and opportunities that lay ahead of us.
When we reflect on the wonderful things that have happened in the past year, there is a very good chance that some of those events are a direct result of the people we are here to honour today.
It is in this regard that I am thrilled and honoured to be part of an event recognizing those receiving the Order of Collingwood and the Companion to the Order of Collingwood.
These people are joining the ranks of community builder that have assisted to create a wonderful place for all of us to live. I am especially proud to note my own father is a Recipient of the Order of Collingwood, as well as, the Companion to the Order of Collingwood.
There are nine (9) people being recognized for their volunteerism in our community. Each of you demonstrates how much you care about our community and its residents through your daily actions.
When we reflect on this, it is you, the recipients who are the ideal role model for all us to celebrate.
When reviewing the list of names receiving the Order of Collingwood and the Companion to the Order of Collingwood I am reminded of a quote from Helen Keller, “When we do the best that we can, we never know what miracle is brought in our life, or in the life of another.” Well I believe each of you represent a miracle in our Community. You each give so much and this is our chance to thank you.
I am honoured to recognize the continued contributions to the residents of Collingwood in building a community in which we can be proud.
We see these people through volunteer hours at the General and Marine Hospital, the Collingwood Royal Canadian Legion, and nurturing our young and old through service clubs and churches. These people make a difference, and for that I say thank you, on behalf of our entire Council and in fact our entire Community.
