While the list contains a significant portion of Barrie-based acts, the 55 audition videos that were received ranged from across the province of Ontario and into Quebec and represented a very diverse and impressive array of talent.
“The selection committee had an incredibly difficult job coming to this final roster,” says Dean Collver, Director of Parks, Recreation and Culture. “We’re appreciative of all of the artists who took the time to make an application for consideration and we’re especially thankful to the public who helped with selecting the final two candidates for the event.”
Voting on the Experience Collingwood Facebook page resulted in the selection of Brian Tuomi and Cam Brown to the Top 10 Semi-Finalists in what was labelled the “Wildcard” segment of the race to the event weekend.
The selected artists will first appear live on Saturday, May 6th, playing only original songs and trying to win over the audience and judging panel for a chance to continue their journey into the Final Show on Sunday, May 7th. The Top 3 Finalists Sunday will share in $5000 in prize money with the champion also winning a resort weekend at Living Water Resort & Spa.
“The Semi-Final list for 2017 is the most eclectic mix of musical genres that we’ve had at L&O,” says Karen Cubitt, Manager of Culture and Events. “Attendees of the live shows in May will see a range from pure rock to pure country, with folk, bluegrass, and reggae/R&B contributing to the broad spectrum.”
The 2017 version of L&O will also include two luncheon workshops, one Saturday and one Sunday that are designed to assist the artists in their chosen vocation. The workshops are open to the public and tickets are available at www.liveandoriginal.ca
The artists will also experience a free recording session with Collingwood’s own Red Room Recordings. The resulting production will be incorporated into a song playlist for sale to the general public. The proceeds will help to grow a bursary that will assist a Collingwood student seeking to pursue a post-secondary education in music.
The singer/songwriter competition will span two nights (Saturday, May 6th
, and Sunday, May 7th
). Tickets are $10 each or $20 for a weekend pass and available at www.liveandoriginal.ca
